Former New York Giants offensive tackle Korey Cunningham has died at the age of 28, the team announced in a statement shared on its X account Friday (April 26).
"We are saddened to hear of the passing of Korey Cunningham. He was a vital part of the spirit and camaraderie of the locker room. Our thoughts are with Korey’s family, friends and teammates," the Giants wrote.
Cunningham's cause of death was not disclosed as of Friday morning. The former University of Cincinnati standout was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the seventh-round of the 2018 NFL Draft at No. 254 overall before being traded to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick.
Cunningham made six starts, all for the Cardinals, in 31 total career appearances during his five-year NFL career. The offensive lineman was initially signed to the Giants' practice squad in September 2021 before being promoted to the active roster the following month.
New York re-signed Cunningham in March 2022, however, his contract was terminated due to a non-football injury in July 2022. The Giants once again signed Cunningham to their practice squad in October 2022 and he was elevated for the team's Week 12 game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Cunningham signed a reserve/future contract with the Giants last offseason but was released in August 2023.
